Note: Adjacent to the modern day town of Debelt, ancient Deultum contains evidence of almost continuous occupation from the Bronze Age. The site shows the remains of an ancient Thracian town closely connected with Athens and other Mediterranean and Black Sea sites from the 7th to the 3rd century BCE. Pottery found here has been the subject of archaeometric investigation. A small Roman colony for army veterans was founded here under the Emperor Vespasian (69-79 CE). Later it became a spa for curative baths and drinks of mineral water, known as Aquakalidae. A significant amount of Imperial Roman colonial coinage has been found here. In medieval times a fortified watchtower was erected here. |
