Note: Auvergne is a region of central France, part of the Massif-Central, a mountainous area inhabited in ancient times by a Gallic tribe, the Arverni, noted for their leader Vercingetorix, who was defeated by Julius Caesar. It was taken by the Visigoths in 475, then by Clovis in 507. It was part of the duchy of Aquitaine, and then went to the Bourbons in 1416. It became a possession of the French crown in 1527, and was officially annexed to that kingdom in 1532. |
