Note: Kyustendil is situated in the Struma River Valley at the foot of the Osogov Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria. The Romans built the town on a Thracian fortified settlement and it became an important center during the Emperor Trajan's rule. Nearly destroyed by barbarians, it was part of an independent state that existed briefly during the time of the first Bulgarian Empire (1018-14th century). Under the Ottoman Empire it prospered as a market town. Since the late 19th century it has grown into an agricultural and industrial center, surrounded by extensive and fertile orchards and vineyards. Industrially it produces canned fruit, woolens, vegetable oils, and packaging. Warm mineral springs make it a resort and health spa. The 2003 estimated population was 162,200. |
