Note: Former province of the Roman Empire, located in southeastern Europe, in the Balkans, south of the Danube river and between the Drinus river and the Black Sea. It was inhabited by Thracian people and taken by the Romans 30-28 BCE; it became a province of the Roman Empire in 15 CE. A fairly prosperous province under the Romans, it was also a district of the later Byzantine Empire until the late 7th century, despite barbarian invasions. Moesia was occupied by Goths in the 4th century CE, and by Slavs and Bulgarians in the 7th century. |
