Note: Ancient maritime district and Roman province in southern Asia Minor, between Lycia and Cilicia. The territory was subject in turn to all of the conquerers that controlled Asia Minor: the Phrygians, Lydians, Persians, Alexander the Great and his successors, and, finally, the Romans. It was originally a narrow strip of land that curved along the Mediterranean between Cilicia and Lycia but it was expanded under Roman rule to include large parts of Pisidia to the north. The Pamphylians were a mixture of aboriginal inhabitants, immigrant Cilicians, and Greeks. In the 1st century BCE they joined with Pisidians and Cilicians in raiding ships in the Mediterranean. The Pamphylians became Hellenized in Roman times and left memorials of their civilization at Perga, Aspendus, and Side. |
