It became a Roman colony in 230 CE; enlarged and strengthened under the Roman emperor Constantius II, who also erected new walls around the city in 349. Taken by King Shapur II of Persia in 363. Controlled by dynasties of Arabs, Turks, Mongols, and Persians until seized by Ottoman sultan in 1516. |
