Note: The Białowieska forest lies in the provinces of Brest and Grodno in western Belarus and the provinces of Białystok, Suwałki, and Łomza in eastern Poland. It is one of the largest areas of primeval mixed forest, consisting of pine, beech, oak, alder, and spruce, left in Europe, covering some 480 square miles. It provides a home for many animals, including elk, deer, wild boar, and the rare European bison, that no longer exist elsewhere. Formerly a hunting ground of kings and tsars, the forest is the oldest nature preserve in Europe. |
