Note: The region consists of a marshy plain lying in 21st century southern Belarus and northern Ukraine. It is the largest swamp in Europe, comprising some 104,000 square miles. About one-third of the region is forested, mostly with pine, thus supporting a lumber industry. A vast amount of land reclamation has taken place during the 20th and 21st centuries. |
