Note: Site of a rock-cut complex of 34 monasteries and temples, extending over a 2 km area; the structures were dug into the wall of a high basalt cliff near Aurangabad and represent Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. The monuments date to 600-1000 CE. UNESCO notes that the site houses a unique artistic creation, which illustrates the spirit of religious tolerance that was characteristic of ancient India. |
