Note: Elbasan is located on the north side of the Shkumbin River, in the highlands on the edge of a fertile plain;. It was founded by Ottoman sultan Mehmed II in 1466 on an ancient site, and was noted as the principal center of Albanian nationalism during Ottoman rule. The modern town's economic activities include timber processing, engineering works, and the production of cement, soap, and olive oil. Its population was estimated to be about 83,300 in 1990. |
