Note: The historic center of the town is designated, along with the historic center of Gjirokastër, a World Heritage Site. It was a town in the ancient the ancient Greek region Epirus. It is possible that it was founded by Cassander, and named after his father Antipater in 314 BCE. A fortress-settlement of the Greek Dassaretae tribe existed in the area as the 6th century BCE, as it was then located on the border between Illyria and Epirus. It was captured by the Romans in the 2nd century BCE.
