Note: Settlement founded on the Adriatic. The Romans called it Acruvium as well as Catarum. The city was destroyed by the Goths in the 5th century, and was then rebuilt. From 1078, Kotor was an autonomous city in the Kingdom of Zeta, to the early 12th century, and later the main port of the Kingdom of Serbia from 1187-1346. From 1346, the city was part of the Empire of Serbia. From 1420-1797, it was part of the Venetian Republic. From 1814-1918, the city was part of Austria-Hungary. From 1918-1928, it was part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. From 1929-1943, it was part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and later the Federal State of Yugoslavia until 1992. From 1992-2006, part of Serbia and Montenegro, and in 2006, Montenegro. The city is part of the "Natural and Culturo-Historical Region of Kotor," named such by UNESCO, and designated a World Heritage Site in 1979. |
