Note: Shkodër is located in northwestern Albania on lake Scutari, at the edge of a wide plain. Roman historian Livy recorded that this was the capital of Illyrian. The Illyrian king Gentius was captured by Rome in 168 BCE. In later centuries, Byzantines, Bulgars, Serbs and Turks took the city successively. After being occupied by the Austrians in 1916-1918 during World War I, it was taken over by the Allied Powers until it was reunited with free Albania in 1921. After 1944 Shkodër resisted the Communist government in vain. It remains the commercial center for the northern mountain area of Albania. Its population by a 1990 estimate was about 81,800. |
