Note: Gjirokastër is a city in southern Albania, overlooking the Drin River valley, Population of 24, 900 by a 1990 estimation. Turks ruled it from 1420 to 1913. It was the center of anti-Turkish resistance in the late 19th century. In the First Balkan War, 1912-1913, the city was claimed by Greece, and between 1939 and 1944 it was occupied in succession by the Italians, the Greeks, and the Germans. The historic center of the town is designated, along with the historic center of the town of Berat, a World Heritage Site. |
