Note: Butrint was an ancient fortified city that guarded the Straits of Corfu. It declined after Visigoth invasions in the 5th century CE, but recovered under Venetian rule from 1386 to 1797. In Medieval times, the land became increasingly marshy and the city was abandoned. The site changed hands several times during Italy's invasion of Greece in 1941. Under the communist regime, the area around Butrint was not developed. After the collapse of the communist regime in the late 20th century, the area for 10 miles around the site was declared a National Park and is preserved for its archaeology and its wildlife. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. |
