Württemberg (general region) |
Note: Württemberg is an area in southwestern Germany, bordering Switzerland and Bavaria, now mostly incorporated within Baden-Württemberg state. It is a mostly hilly and mountainous region drained by the Neckar River and including the Black Forest and the Swabian Jura. It was settled originally by Celts, later by Suevi, Romans, Alemanni, Clovis, and Franks (486 CE). It was the core of the holdings of the counts and dukes of Württemberg from the 11th to the 16th century. It became a kingdom in 1806, after receiving large grants of new territory from Napoleon I. In the late 19th century it joined the new German Empire but retained its status as a kingdom and considerable control over its own affairs. It enjoyed fairly liberal political policies until World War I and the abdication of its king, after which it became a republic within the Weimar Republic and lost much of its independent powers. It lost its state assembly under the Nazi Regime. After World War II it was divided into French and American occupation zones, then into three states as part of the western Federal Republic of Germany. These three were merged in 1952 to become the present state. |
