Note: Located on the Caspian Sea, Turkmenbashi was founded by the Russians in 1869 and named Krasnovodsk. It became an important shipping center as the termination point of the Transcaspian Railway in 1896, and remains the terminus of the Central Asian Railway today. Oil and natural gas remain the primary industries. |
