Note: Západočeský is a forested and agricultural region in the western Czech Republic, bordering Germany on the west and north. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, it consists mostly of hilly terrain, with relatively small lowland area in the valleys of the Berounka River and its tributaries, and measuring some 4199 square miles. It produces hay, wheat, barley, oats, potatoes, rye, apples, plums, pears and cherries. The highlands produced much timber. The region's main mineral deposits are of coal, with tin, tungsten, and. Kaolin mined in lesser quantities. It is also known for its warm mineral springs. The regional capital is the city of Plzeň. The 1991 estimated population was 860,311. |
