Note: The city of Alborg is a seaport and the county seat of Nordjylland, Denmark, situated on the south side of Limfjorden. One of oldest towns in Denmark, it was founded around 1000CE, received its charter in 1342, and became a bishopric in 1554. The religious civil war of 1533-1536, known as Count's War, set its development back considerably, but in the 17th century it became an important center of commerce. It is noted as site of the Danish surrender to a Roman Catholic commander in Thirty Years' War. Its historic landmarks include The Holy Ghost Monastery, founded 1431, the Budolfi Cathedral built ca. 1500, and the Alborghus, a castle built in 1539. Its cultural institutions include the Alborg art and historical museum, featuring artifacts from a nearby Viking cemetery, a national park with an Emigration Museum on its grounds, and the University Center of Alborg, founded 1974. Its 2004 estimated population was 120,900.
