Note: Prosperous empire of Southeast Asia which, at its peak, ruled the majority of the region. Its existence began in the 9th century CE, and continued to expand and thrive for several centuries. Mahayana Buddhism eventually was replaced by Theravada Buddhism, which caused a decline of royal power. Its capital city, Angkor, notable for its elaborate temple complexes, was abandoned in the 16th century. |
