Note: The German city of Pirmasens is located some 40 miles west northwest of Karlsruhe near the French border. It originally belonged to the counts of Hanau-Lichtenberg. It came into the possession of Hessen-Darmstadt in 1736. Receiving its charter in 1763, it was taken by the French in 1794, then went to Bavaria in 1816. the city became noted for the manufacture of leather goods, especially footwear, in the 19th century. It was severely damaged in World War II, but has since been rebuilt and continues to be an international center for the manufacture of shoes. Its calculated population for 2005 was 43,539. |
