Note: The eastern German city of Pirna is situated on the Elbe river, about eleven miles southeast of Dresden. It was first mentioned in the 13th century. It was ruled by Bohemia from 1398, then by Meissen in the 15th century. In 1465 Johann Tetzel was born there, a Dominican friar who preached against the Roman Catholic practice of indulgences, anticipating the Reformation of Martin Luther. It was the site of Saxony's surrender to Prussia in 1756. Its primary historic structure is a 16th-century castle. Today the city is an industrial center producing steel castings, glass, paper, furniture, and artificial silk. Its calculated population for 2005 was 39,701. |
