Note: The town in southern Bulgaria is located in the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, in a fertile agricultural area. It was founded around 1385 at the beginning of the Ottoman Empire. It produces silk and cotton textiles, packaged vegetables, and tobacco. The area nearby grows wine grapes and cotton, and there is a warm mineral springs resort. The 1992 estimated population was 95,300. |
