Note: Located at confluence of Oude Rijn & Nieuwe Rijn Rivers. Was a holding of the Utrecht diocese in the10th century and the city grew around the12th century castle. Ruled by the count of Holland until 1420. The Elzevir family established a printing press here and it became a printing center in the 16th century. Site of the oldest university in Holland founded in 1575. The Pilgrims lived her for 11 years before sailing to America in 1620. |
