Note: Southwestern region of Azerbaijan encompassing an area of 1,700 square miles. The region was originally known as Artsakh. Russia annexed it to Azerbaijan as a province in 1923, although its population was largely Armenian, turning Nagorno-Karabakh into a minority enclave. In 1988, the region's ethnic Armenians began calling for a return of the province to Armenia, which was opposed by the Soviets. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Armenians and Azerbaijanis in the region went to war, with the Armenian Forces gaining control of much of southwestern Azerbaijan after a 1994 cease-fire negotiated by the Russians. Presently, the de facto Nagorno-Karabakh Republic is recognized by three United Nations member states. It is considered part of Azerbaijan by the UN. Numerous Azeri raions fall partly, or completely, within the region. |
