Note: The city of Frankfurt an der Oder is located in the eastern German state of Brandenburg on the west bank of the Oder River, opposite the Polish city of SÅ‚ubice. It was an early medieval settlement of Franconian colonists and traders. It joined the Hanseatic League in 1368, and was an important site of commerce and education. It was sacked by the Swedes in the 17th century, and severely damaged again in World War II. Rebuilt under the Communist regime of East Germany, it nevertheless retained some historic architecture, such as the 15th-century Marienkirche, the old town hall rebuilt in 1607-09, some old university buildings, and the Kleist Museum, honoring the poet and native son Heinrich von Kleist. It is a transportation center, being a highway and railway junction, and having a harbor on the Oder River near its juncture with the Oder-Spree Canal. Its manufactures include shoes, textiles, processed foods, and machinery. The 2004 estimated population was 86,400. |
