Note: The city of Hamm lies on the eastern edge of the German Ruhr industrial area, situated along the Lippe and Ahse Rivers and Lippe-Seiten Canal. Founded in 1226 as the capital of Mark countship, it was an influential member of the northern European mercantile union, the Hanseatic League, from 1417. It declined after the various wars of the 17th and 18th centuries, but revived with the19th-century industrial revolution, because of its proximity to coal mines and the development of heavy industries. It functioned as a traffic, supply, and power center in World War II, and was in consequence heavily bombed. Overhalf of its buildings were destroyed. Surviving historic structures include the medieval St. Paul's Church and the ruins of the 16th-century St. Agnes Church. The modern city is an important railway junction. Its industries include the manufacture of metal wire and cable chief among them. The 2004 estimated population was 185,200. |
