Note: The present-day capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, which lies on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, was first recorded as a settlement in 885 CE. The Persians made the city their capital in the 12th century. It was taken by Peter I the Great in 1723, but re-taken by Persia in 1735, and in 1806, the Russians captured the city. It has been the capital since 1920. Baku is a major petroleum center, oil having been discovered in the region around the 8th century. The Russians began commercially exploiting Baku's oil reserves in 1872, and the city became a production center for oil industry equipment as well. Baku's center is known as fortress of Icheri-Shekher, or the old town, which contains many ancient buildings, including the tower of Kyz-Kalasy (12th century), and the Synyk-Kala Minaret and Mosque (11th century). The walled city of Baku (including its structures) was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
