Note: Nation in eastern Transcaucasia, forming the northern part of the historic Azarbaijan region. The area was originally populated by Turkic tribes, Kurds, and Albanians. Incursions into the regions by the Arabs in the 7th century established Islamic rulers. In the 11th century, invasions by the Seljuks resulted in the dominance of Turkic dialects. The area was later ruled by the Persians from the 17th century. Borders changed after the Russian and Persian empires clashed in the early 19th century. Baku, the capital city, became a major source of oil for the Russians, and the area became part of the Soviet Union in 1920, as Azerbaijan. |
