Note: Was a Hellenistic, Parthian, and Roman border city built on an escarpment 90 m above the right bank of the Euphrates river, across the river from modern Salihiyah. Was a caravan center located on the Syrian Euphrates; Babylonian town, then founded as military colony by Seleucids ca. 300 BCE; was laid out with Hellenistic grid plan by Macedonians; Parthians made this a frontier fortress against Romans ca. 100 BCE; was Roman, then captured & destroyed by Sasanians 256 CE. The city was pillaged and never rebuilt. |
