Note: Site dating to Classic Maya period; it flourished from the 730s to the 890s CE, when it was apparently abandoned. The distinctive architecture is unline typical Classical examples in this area; the structures here are constructed of large stone blocks laid with no mortar, using black slate rather than the limestone typical of other structures in the region. The ruins were discovered in 1924. Contains hieroglyphic inscriptions.
