Note: Ancient site occupied as early as 16th century BCE. Was a prominent Pre-Classic center from the 4th century BCE, noted for temple pyramid. During the Spanish conquest, friars established two Roman Catholic churches here. Occupation by local people continued until the 17th century CE. Lamanai is an ancient Maya site in Belize with hieroglyphic inscriptions.
