Note: The Bodensee is a lake that borders Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, occupying an old glacier basin that forms part of the course of the Rhein River. It is about 40 miles long and up to eight miles wide, with a surface area of 209 square miles. It is known for the remains of Neolithic lake dwellings. By the medieval period the lake was a vital agent of transportation and trade between European nations. The lake collects and stores heat, creating a mild climate that allows for the growing of grapevines and fruit tress in the region, and makes it a popular tourist destination. Important lakeside cities are Konstanz, Lindau, and Friedrichshafen in Germany, Bregenz in Austria, and Kreuzlingen in Switzerland. |
