Note: The Brenner Pass is a mountain pass between Austria and Italy, one of the lowest of all important Alpine passes at 4,511 feet and open all year long. Used since early times, it was the most important route between the Po River Valley of Italy and the eastern Alps of Germany. A carriage road was built through the pass in 1772, then a railroad in 1864-1867. A modern thoroughfare for wheeled traffic, the Brenner Highway, was built in the early 1970s and connects Kufstein, Austria with Modena, Italy. It continues to be one of Europe's principal trade routes. |
