Note: The region comprises the Altai Mountains, valleys, and broad basins. It was inhabited as early as 3000 BCE, and inhabited by Mongols in the 5th century BCE. Later, it was ruled by the Turkish khanate from the 6th-10th centuries, and the Mongol khanates from the 13th-16th centuries. The region has been under Russian control since 1756. The economy is based on agriculture. |
