Note: An international organization governing common economic, social, and security policies of most European nations. After the devastation of World War II, there was a strong desire to prevent future wars between European nations; economic cooperation was seen as a means to prevent such political conflict. The European Union was created by the Maastricht Treaty, which entered into force on November 1, 1993; the objectives are enhanced European political and economic integration through the creation of a single currency, a unified foreign and security policy, and common citizenship rights. It also seeks to advance cooperation in the areas of immigration, asylum, and judicial affairs. The EU has its roots in the European Coal and Steel Community (formed 1952) and the European Economic Community (formed 1958).
