Note: Comprises Guernsey island and a few smaller islands. The area was settled in prehistoric times. It was incorporated into Normandy in 933. Documents from the 11th century attest to a handful of landowners, including the Duke of Normandy. Guernsey was separated politically from Normandy in 1204. English is generally spoken in the towns, though a Norman-French patois is also spoken. |
