Note: This mountainous region of northeastern Spain was established when Sancho III the Great of Navarre left the small Aragón county to his son Ramiro I in 1035 and made it an independent kingdom. Ramiro and others doubled its size by 1104. Aragón and Catalonia were united under the crown of Aragón in 1140. Aragón united with the kingdom of Castile in 1479, however, it kept its own parliament and administrative institutions until the early 18th century. The old kingdom remained as one administrative unit until 1833, when it was split into three provinces. See also the modern Spanish region of Aragón. |
