Note: Ruse is Bulgaria's fifth largest city and its principal river port, situated on the Danube River in northern Bulgaria. It was first established as a Roman station under Vespasian in the first century CE. Fortified by Diocletian, it was destroyed by the Avars and Slavs after 596. The Ottoman Turks developed a new town here, which became a vital military base and fortress. In 1877 the city was taken by the Russians and ceded to Bulgaria. The city is a cultural center, with a symphony orchestra, art gallery, opera house, and museum. It is also an agricultural center with a state livestock-breeding farm nearby. The 2003 estimated population was 161,000. |
