Note: One of the longest-running states in West Africa, emerging in the 8th century in Kanem and lasting until European colonization in the early 20th century. With the adoption of Islam in the 11th century, Kanem-Borno expanded its territory beyond the Lake Chad basin. The state depended primarily on trans-Saharan trade and slavery.
