Note: Pomerania is a region of northeastern Europe lying along the Baltic coast between the Oder River of Germany and the Vistula River of Poland. Politically, the name also came to include the area west of the Oder as far as Stralsund It was settled successively by Celts, Germanic peoples, and then in the fifth century by Slavic tribes. Polish princes ruled it from the late 10th century until 1637, during which time it was divided into three duchies ruled by Prussia from 19th century through World War I, after which Eastern Pomerania was ceded to Poland. Following World War II, Central Pomerania went also to Poland, and Western Pomerania added to The German Democratic Republic, and after 1989 became part of the united Federal Republic of Germany. |
