Note: Hessen is a general region of Germany, divided among the states of Rheinland-Pfalz, Hessen, and Thüringen. Formerly a medieval landgraviate and then a dukedom, it was divided between the sons of the Margrave Philip I in 1567. Over time, various sections included Hessen-Darmstadt, Hessen-Kassel, Hessen-Homburg, and Hessen-Nassau.
