Note: A saucer-shaped coral atoll in the South Pacific; it is uninhabited & arid. It is approximately 1 mile long and 1500 yards wide. Administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Named New Nantucket Island in 1825 by a whaler named Orbed Starbuck but later renamed Baker Island by an American mariner, Capt. Michael Baker, in 1832. It was occupied by Hawaiian colonists in 1935; originally claimed by USA to harvest guano deposits. It has been valued for its strategic importance; site of a US Coast Guard LORAN station in WW II. |
