Note: The largest city in Central Asia, Tashkent is located in the Chirchiq River valley close to the border of Kazakhstan. It dates from around the 2nd-1st centuries BCE, and has been known as Tashkent (stone village) since the 11th century CE. Because of its location along a strategic caravan route, the Arabs first conquered Tashkent in the 8th century, and later the Mongols conquered in the 13th. After Timurnid and Shaybanid rule, the city was annexed to the khanate of Kokand. By 1865, when the Russians captured the city, the population was 70,000. The Russians established the protectorate of Turkistan, and make Tashkent the capital in 1867. Turkistan was divided in 1924, and Tashkent became the capital of the new region in 1930. The city's main industry is cotton production, and it contains many institutions of higher education. Although several structures from the 15th and 16th centuries still survive, earthquake damage has caused much of the city to be rebuilt. |
