Note: The city of Klagenfurt is situated on the Glan River of southern Austria, east of the Wörther See and north of the Karawanken Mountains. Founded is the 12th century, it was an important medieval center, coming under the Hapsburgs in 1335. It was largely destroyed by fire in 1514, but soon rebuilt. Therefore, most of its finest buildings date from the 16th century. It reached its zenith as a commercial power in the 18th century. In 1518, it became the capital of the state of Kämten, which it remains to this day. In 2003 the population was estimated at 89,900.
