Note: Roman imperial province primarily in modern northeastern France. It was one of the four provinces of Gaul. Under the emperor Augustus Belgica stretched from the Seine River eastward to the Rhine and included the Low Countries in the north and the Helvetian territory in the south. The capital was Durocortorum Remorum (modern Reims). Domitian (81-96 CE), made the northern and southernmost parts of Belgica into the separate provinces of Germania Inferior and Germania Superior, respectively. Under Diocletian (ca. 300 CE), the remaining territory was divided into Belgica Prima, with its capital at Augusta Treverorum (modern Trier) and Belgica Secunda, with its capital at Durocortorum Remorum. Belgica was absorbed into the kingdoms of the Salian and Ripuarian Franks in the 5th century.
