Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe. The reservation spans over 35,300 acres, the distance of the Nevada-Oregon border, in Humboldt County, Nevada and Malheur County, Oregon. The Quinn River runs east to west through the Tribe's Nevada lands. The reservation was initially established on August 14, 1865 as the Fort McDermitt Military Reservation, a U.S. Army fort built at the former site of Quinn River Camp No. 33 and Quinn River Station; the fort and its former sites were located on the traditional homelands of the Paiute, Shoshone, and Bannock peoples. When the military fort was closed in 1889, it was adapted as the Fort McDermitt Indian Agency onto which Northern Paiute and Shoshone peoples were settled. The reservation was officially established under its current name by the federal government in 1936 in accordance with the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934. |
