Note: Inhabited since ancient times, with a diverse population of inhabitants, including Arameans, Hurrians, and Mitannians. Today, inhabitants are mainly Turkmeni. Located on terminus of railroad from Baghdad. Site of an important Ottoman castle, and said to be the site of the "firey furnace" in The Book of Daniel. Seized by Arab forces 1941 and retaken by British in same year. Trades in agricultural produce and cattle, manufactures textiles. Major center of Iraq's petroleum industry. |
