Isola Ferdinandea (former island) |
Note: Volcanic island that rose from the sea between Sciacca & the island of Pantelleria on July 18, 1831; disappeared entirely on January 18, 1832. The rock, which rose some 213 feet above the surface and had a circumference of about 3 miles, was above water for around for six months; the British claimed it as Graham Island, while Sicily's King Ferdinand II called it Ferdinandea. Over the centuries, the island has emerged four times, with underwater volcanic eruptions, first recorded during the first Punic War of 264-241 BCE. |
