Note: Family containing 44 genera and around 760 species of primarily herbaceous plants, but the family also includes some woody shrubs and a genus of small tropical trees. All species in the family have bisexual, regular, dish-shaped flowers with one superior pistil (female structure) and many stamens (male parts). The buds and flowers are usually large and often nodding.

Dutch ..... Familie die 44 genera en circa 760 soorten overwegend kruidachtige planten omvat. Tot de familie behoren echter ook enkele houtachtige heesters en een genus van kleine tropische bomen. Alle soorten in de familie hebben tweeslachtige, regelmatige, schotelvormige bloemen met één hoofdstamper (vrouwelijke structuur) en diverse meeldraden (mannelijke delen). De knoppen en bloemen zijn doorgaans groot en vaak knikkend.
